The Vale of Avoca: help shape its future

What would you like to see improved in the Vale of Avoca? Whether you walk its trails regularly or visit occasionally, this is an opportunity to help shape the ravine’s future.

The City and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) are studying improvements to this 1.5 km stretch of urban woodland, from Mount Pleasant Cemetery to Mount Pleasant Road. The project will evaluate and prioritize ways to improve access, trails and the visitor experience, reduce the effects of erosion and flooding, and enhance the natural environment.

Regular visitors will have seen the need for action: deteriorating trails, access points and slopes, along with the spread of non-native plants that crowd out native species and reduce biodiversity.

The Midtown Ravines Group (MRG), of which DPRG is a member, has been an active partner in the Vale of Avoca Working Group, bringing together area Councillors, the TRCA, City staff and Toronto Water. MRG has advocated for a coordinated approach that recognises both the ravine’s status as an Environmentally Significant Area (ESA) and the pressures of population growth from planned development.

Reaching this stage is an important milestone. As a clear plan takes shape, MRG will also serve as a fundraising partner to help see the work through and establish a conservancy to sustain the improvements over time.

Two ways to have your say

  • Complete the online survey by October 22, 2026.
  • Attend the public drop-in event at Deer Park Public Library, 40 St. Clair Avenue East, on October 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The drop-in will have no formal presentation. It is a chance to share what matters to you about the ravine and what you hope to see in a restored Vale of Avoca.

There will be further opportunities to comment as assessments and recommendations progress. Your input now can help set the direction for this once-in-a-generation project.
